The Markovo Kennels rescue project in the 1970s saved Seppala strain of the Siberian Husky from extinction and provided the basis for the founding in 1997 of the Seppala Siberian Sleddog evolving breed in Canada's Yukon Territory.

AT THE CLOSE OF the dispersal sale, the situation once more seemed favourable for Seppalas. There was a substantial body of young stock representing the possibility of a number of possible continuation breedings. Gary Egelston was still breeding Seppalas in Missouri. There were other pure Seppalas still available, at Johanna Wilson's and other kennels, whose genes had not yet been integrated into the Markovo gene pool.

Shango of Seppala in 1974 in Saskatchewan at Markovo Kennels, key Siberian Husky stud dog in the rescue of Seppala strain from extinction.

As it turned out, three parties who had already bought pups from me or expressed strong interest wanted -- or thought they wanted -- to carry on the pure Seppala breeding programme which I had begun and to have pure Seppala sleddog teams. Those three took the lion's share of the MARKOVO stock. They are listed below together with the dogs they bought; MARKOVO dogs that they already possessed at the time of the sale are listed in brackets {thus}:

The three kennel groups, Barb Bailey's Tagil Kennels, Bruce Morrow's Uelen Kennels, and Curt Stuckey's continuation of Markovo Kennels, ought to have been able to have forged independent bloodlines, each one in its own right, with the potential of trading stock among themselves and adding to the genetic base from the remaining Seppala stock from McFaul, Gagnon, and McDougall lineage at the kennels of Verner Zoschke, Johanna Wilson, and the other Québec kennels. Each one had a viable group of stock for breeding purposes, yet no one individual had all the best dogs. Had Bailey, Stuckey and Morrow carried out the intentions they each expressed to me, pure Seppala strain would be in great shape today, and we would have no confusion about Seppala identity, nor any part-Seppala problem.
As luck would have it, each of the three Markovo successor kennels failed quite soon, each in its own individual way. The fate of the strain then fell into the hands of those who failed to understand, or else did not believe in, the principles that had guided the major Seppala breeders from 1930 through the mid-1960s, and that Markovo Kennels, too, had honoured. From the immediate post-Markovo period until the present, the guidelines laid down by Wheeler, Belford, Shearer and McFaul were largely ignored.
